Homesteading Homepage

Wikipedia start off by describing homesteading as "a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of foodstuffs."

This is an excellent synopsis of what homesteading means to us. I think it is safe to say that in this day and age total self-sufficiency comes to few of us. Even Dick Proenneke had to have supplies sent in to him. So, the real question becomes "how close can a person or family really climb up the ladder to total self-sufficiency?" "Subsistence agriculture" is a key phrase in all of this as it defines the ability for someone to maintain or support themselves at a minimum level.

My wife and I have done many things that could fall under the umbrella of homesteading. We have never with purposeful intent tried homesteading. In this case I would label what we are going to be doing as "Suburban Homesteading."

Here are some of the questions we pose and hope to answer in the next few years.

These and many more questions we will be looking to answer over the next few years. It is also our intent to document as much of the journey as we can.

The journey begins.
