Improbable Giant Victory in Super Bowl
February 4, 2008 | Leave a Comment
After New England came down and scored late in the game to take a 14-10 lead I thought they may go 19-0 but based on their lackluster performance in this game there will be on-going debate as to the greatest team of all time.
But you just new when Eli Manning somehow got out of the grasp on third down, less than a minute to play, hurled the ball downfield to David Tyree who made a catch that you had to see to believe you just knew something special was in the making.

Post Season Baseball

It is especially fun for the guys that are playing the game. How many people get to have their childhood dream become their occupation? If only for a brief interlude. I mean you really don’t think for a moment that these guy grow up at some point has to say. “Ya know I am not much good at anything else so I guess I have to be a big leaguer”.
Today there are two races happening in the NL. All San Diego has to do is win one game with two to go and they are in. The Mets and Corlorado are on their heals still with a shot. One hundred and sixty games and months later hope still spring eternal for three teams. the Phillies are also half game up with the Mets winning today. The Phils are currently choking (now there is something new). So, even if San diego holds on right now with an two innings to go and a one run lead over Milwaukee, the Mets still have a hope that tomorrows game counts.
Milwaukee folded up at the end and the Cubs closed them out and are in the post season with their manager “Sweet Lou”. Milwakee is out of the wildcard hunt. They are playing San Diego for pride. San Diego would not want it any other way. If Lou could take Chicago to win the world series he would become eligable for sainthood, or even more important. Mayor of Chicago. And, he would not even have to worry about keeping the snow off of the road! But, remember Steve Bartman and remember the Billy Goat.
San Diego… so close to going to the post season. Old Timer Greg Maddux with another shot at the post season. Trevor Hoffman now on the mound for San Diego in the 9th trying to close it out. Two out, man on second 2-1 count. And, ironically who is at bat for Milwaukee…Tony Gwynn’s son. What does he do…triple to right. Now bottom nine, Brewers can win with a hit…Hope really does spring eternal. Man, I love this game.

New York Pizza Rocks
February 27, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Am in NYC this week on business staying in Midtown. Just got through devouring a 14″ pie at Angelo’s on W 57th and 6th (across the street from Carnegie Hall).
There is no shortage of great pizza places in the city. I just love this city and the people.

Three Unwise financial moves to make with your income
December 24, 2006 | Leave a Comment
Unless you are at the edge of the cliff ready to fall, the following are a list of taboo financial moves to make
- Borrowing against your 401k or other retirement accounts
- Borrowing against you mortgage to payoff credit card debt
- Stopping retirement savings to deal with monthly cash flow problems
1. Some 401k plans allow you to borrow money against your earnings. Stay away for these! The whole point of retirement plans are to save for your future. Never withdraw or transfer money from retirement accounts without first consulting with a tax professional. The penanlties for doing this are severe and you would actually save money by just burning it in your fireplace.
2. How did you get into credit card debt to begin with? Are you not disciplined with spending money? If the answer is no, then how are you going to stay out of debt once you pay it down? Borrowing equity in your home to pay off your credit cards is a rotten idea. Take a pair of scissors and cut the cards up, then start making double or triple the minimum payment required. This is the best way to get out of debt.
3. If you are considering cutting or stopping your retirement savings in order to meet your monthly spending you need to reconsider. For one, if you are in a qualified pre-tax plan you will end up paying more in tax and actually cutting your paycheck. And, if your company matches your contributions you are giving money away. 401k information. Instead, put together a budget, or change your budget. Some belt-tightening may be in order.

No I am not a survivalist!

My wife and I recently watched Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth . It was quite a sobering movie.
This past week the Puget Sound region (Seattle Metro Area) got hit with a windstorm that knocked out power for half a million+ area residents. Good ‘ol mother nature created some real havoc in our area. A few days after the storm we experienced gas lines that were quite long. This really got me thinking about how fragile our civilized society really is.
You walk through these huge mega supermarkets and on one hand marvel at the abundance, and on the other hand realize how quickly the shelves would be cleared in the event of a catastrophic situation (like Katrina).
About a year earlier I had purchased some food for storage from Walton Feed. It was actually pretty good stuff and quite reasonably priced. These recent events in our weather patterns have really made me wonder if having a weeks of food on-hand is really not such a bad investment after all.
Don’t get me wrong. I am not suggesting that we all buy Bowie knives and take to the woods to live off the land. But, these are some very interesting times and, well, just trying to be prepared.
